Screen House: An Eco-Residential Marvel by Renaissance Planners & Designers

Revolutionizing Residential Design with Innovative Sun Filtering and Ventilation Techniques

The inspiration for Screen House came from a comprehensive study of the site, including the sun's movement and the neighboring houses. The design team then worked out solutions to the house's issues, such as poor lighting, inadequate cross ventilation, and poorly planned and organized circulation space.

Screen House's unique properties lie in its innovative solutions to these challenges. The original house suffered from poor lighting and ventilation. To address this, the design team proposed large windows to increase natural light while simultaneously filtering the sun's heat. The stairs were designed to act as an airwell, complete with a skylight and ventilation vents, to improve air circulation and keep the house cool. The external facade's screen not only provides shade from the sun but also offers privacy, as the neighboring houses are built closely together.

The design team, consisting of Hannan Khair and Kelvin Bing, ensured that the spaces within the house were well-planned and organized. They created a void over the dining area and a link bridge to allow users to interact with different spaces. The attic was repurposed as an entertainment area for hosting guests.

The Screen House project began in February 2011 in Singapore and was completed in February 2012. The design's success is evident in its ability to transform a dark, poorly ventilated house into a well-lit, well-ventilated, and eco-friendly living space.

The Screen House's innovative design did not go unnoticed. In 2014, it was awarded the Platinum A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal well-being, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
